Being a single parent is not only exhausting, but it’s expensive. As a cash-strapped single mom or dad, you can only sell your kids’ outgrown clothes and skimp on cable for so long. There comes a time when you simply need to bring in more money. According to CNN, more than 44 million Americans have a side hustle these days. Working on the side without sacrificing tons of valuable family time may seem impossible, but it can be done. Here are 10 lucrative side gigs to inspire you.

  1. Child care. You can earn $15-$25 per hour for bringing another child into your home. By posting your profile on sites such as Care.com or UrbanSitter, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to find a good fit. Find a child your child’s age, and it will be a win-win.

  2. Dog walking and dog boarding. This side gig is a very in-demand service. If you’re a dog lover, what’s not to love? Fresh air, exercise, doggy therapy and, yes, extra cash.

  3. Blogging. After the young ones are tucked into bed, write about whatever you want while partnering with affiliate companies or advertisers. Depending upon your following, the sky’s the limit regarding earnings.

  4. Freelance work. Whether you have a background in graphic design, writing or even as a CPA, freelance opportunities abound on sites such as Upwork. If you are a teacher, consider offering your services as a tutor.

  5. Sell on eBay. Do you love to shop and have a knack for buying low and selling high? Finding items to sell can be as easy as combing your local garage sales and swap meets or by heading up to your attic. This can be fun for the whole family.

  6. Rent out one of your rooms. If you live near business districts or tourist attractions, your room might be popular on Airbnb or VRBO.

  7. Sell your homemade goods. Turn your passion for crafts, soap making or carpentry into goods you can sell on Etsy or at your local farmers market.

  8. Do transcription. If you’re a decent typist, consider being a transcriptionist while your kids sleep or are playing. You’ll need to be comfortable using your computer for downloading files, doing research, etc. As a general transcriptionist, you might be listening to and transcribing anything from personal conversations to business meetings or college lectures. The best part is you can do it all from the comforts of home.

  9. Drive with Lyft or Uber. When your kids are at school or on the weekends they’re with their other parent, you can earn good money driving people around town. All you need is to have a year of driving experience, pass a background check and own a car made in 2005 or later. You determine your availability by logging in when you can take rides and logging off when you can’t. You keep a portion of ride fees and 100 percent of passenger tips.

  10. Grocery shop for others. With the same flexibility as Lyft or Uber, with Shipt, you determine how much or how little you work. An app sends you order requests that you can accept or pass. Once you accept an order, you receive a grocery list. Using a company credit card, you buy the goods and deliver. Shipt contractors earn from $16 to $22 per hour, not including tips. Tips are the icing on the cake and depending upon your personality, that can be some pretty sweet icing.

Kudos to you for being such a responsible parent. Make sure you surround yourself with positive people who encourage you and support you in your financial goals. Most of all, be kind to yourself and savor these precious days with your little ones. Whether you need the extra income of side gigs for only a couple of months or for a couple of years, know that the amazing example you’re setting for your children will last a lifetime.
